About Emily Melissa Case Hancock

Obituary:

"On the 26th of April, Emily Melissa [Richey] Hancock, wife of Levi W. Hancock, aged 27 years, 1 month, and 15 days. Sister Emily became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at a very early period of her life, being 13 years of age, having embraced the gospel, and was baptized by Elder Benjamin L. Clapp in the State of Mississippi. She gathered with the Saints to Nauvoo in the following year, and was one in the first company that followed the Pioneers in their exodus across the plains to these valleys. Here she became the mother of four children, who are now living. Her faith was strong and unwavering in the principles of life and salvation. Her constancy and integrity in the cause of God and in keeping His commandments was exemplary. Her peace and tranquility of mind bouyed her up above the reverses of life and endeared her to all her friends and acquaintances; having an enlarged measure of the Spirit of God her mind was stored with the treasures of wisdom and knowledge; and her vigorous spirit pierced through the trying scenes through which she had to suffer, to such a degree that the visions of heaven were glorious, even to manifestations of heavenly personages, whe were openly revealed to her which she made known to those who attended her during her last moments - the joys and glories of celestial day filled her mind to exstacy and her feeble voice would often burst forth in the following strains:-- 'My soul's full of glory, Inspiring my tongue; Could I meet with bright angel's I'd sing them a song; I'd sing of my Jusus and tell of his charms, And beg them to bear me to his loving arms.' In her dying moments she could say with the Apostle, 'henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord the righteousness Judge shall give me in that day, and not to me only but to all them that love his appearing. -(Communicated)"
