Born Emma Keliikekukahilikaleleokalahikiolaokalani, May 27, 1872 at Kuliouou, Oahu. Her middle name was translated by Mary Kawena Pukui and means, The chiefess who holds the leaning Kahili of the life giving sun in heaven.
WIDOW OF FIRST HONOLULU MAYOR CALLED BY DEATH -Following an illness of seven months' duration. Mrs. Emma K.Hiram Fern, widow of former Mayor Joseph James Fern, died at 11:30 p. m. Friday at her home, 3450 Hardesty street, Kaimuki. Heart trouble was the cause of death. Services will be held at 2 p. m. tomorrow at Borthwick's mortuary, where the body will go on view after 7 p. m. today. Following the service, the body will be cremated. Mrs. Fern was born in Honolulu on May 27, 1872, and was 65 years of age. She was a member of several local Hawaiian women's organizations and was an accomplished chanter and dancer. The picture used with this story shows Mrs. Fern in pa-u costume in a Hawaiian parade of several years ago. She was Mrs. Emma K. Sylva when on August 15, 1910, she married the late Mayor Fern, who was for many years a prominent figure in Honolulu politics. The late mayor was long a shipping master on the Honolulu water- front. He served several terms as mayor of Honolulu. Of nine children born to Mrs.Fern only three survive her. They are Mrs. Rebecca La Chance, Mrs.Victoria Ano and Mrs. Annie Wood. Her step-children are Mrs. Mary Fern Coiner, Mrs. Nancy Fern Conway, Miss Stella H. K.Fern, residing in Italy; Joseph J.,and George Fern, both living abroad, and a nephew, Paul Newalu Puihale.
