About Emma Larson

The above photo was found on Ancestry.com and depicts four of Jesse Nathaniel Smith's wives. Front row, left, Emma Seraphine West, right, Janet Mauretta Johnson. Back row, left, Augusta Maria Outzen, and right, Emma Ellen Larson. The photo was probably taken sometime before 1910 when Emma Seraphine (West) Smith died from breast cancer. Jesse's fifth wife, Margaret Fletcher West, sister of Emma Seraphine West, passed away at the very young age of 25 in 1864 after the birth of two children, who were only 5 and 7 years old when she died. At the time, Jesse was serving a mission in Denmark. Margaret's sister, Emma Seraphine (West) Smith, raised Margaret and Jesse's daughter and son as her own after Margaret's death. There is another photo under the Media Tab above showing Emma (Larson) Smith when she was a younger woman. That photo was found on Find A Grave.com.

Obituary: Pioneer Dies At Snowflake -- Snowflake, June 2, Mrs. Emma Larson Smith, 80-year old pioneer who came to Arizona in 1878 in a wagon drawn by oxen, died at her home here last night. She was married to Jess N. Smith of Snowflake October 28, 1881, and they became the parents of six sons and three daughters. All survive except one daughter and a son, Lehi, who was killed in action in France during the last war. After the war, Mrs. Smith went to Europe as a Gold Star Mother to visit his grave.

Mrs. Smith was the daughter of Swedish immigrants, Mons and Ellen Larson, who came to the United States in 1859 and crossed the plains to Utah with a Mormon company. Left a widow at the age of 43, she studied nursing and worked to educate her children, most of whom completed college courses. She was an active worker in the Latter Day Saints Church, and spent much time in the temple in Mesa.

Surviving sons are Don Smith, Mesa; George, Show Low; Aiken and Foss, Joseph City; and Hyrum, now living in Utah. Daughters are Mrs. Hyrum Broadbent, Snowflake, and Myrtle Smith, whose address was not learned immediately.
