Born in South Carolina according to later census information, unknown city or county. Baptized 7/26/1891, Mt. Olive Baptist Church, Cherokee County, GA. Emmanuel's first wife or wives are currently unknown. He had two children born in SC and two in GA before marrying Brazenia (Ceney) Byce in 1858. He was 20 or 25 years older than Ceney. On one census he was born in 1808 and on another it was 1813. He was listed on the 1860 Agriculture Census living in Cass County (Cartersville PO). He was shown to have 160 acres of land (60 under cultivation). He had 2 horses, 1 mule, 2 milch cows, 4 other cattle and 8 pigs. In 1870, he owned 160 acres in Cherokee County (50 under cultivation). 1 horse, 1 mule, 2 milch cows, 3 other cattle, 5 sheep and 15 pigs. In 1880,m 130 acres (30 under cultivation), 1 horse, 1 mule, 3 milch cows, 2 calves, 3 other cattle and 4 pigs.
