Ephraim Guffey

Please note that the Alabama branch of the Guffey family tree has individuals with the first/middle names Ephraim, Monroe, Berry and Underwood. Please double-check your Alabama entries with regard to these names. Also note that the Alabama branch descends from Henry McGuffey (1738-1816) and wife Letitia and not from Henry's brother Ephraim (1740-1804) and wife Nancy.

The descendants of Henry McGuffey and Letitia Dearing's son Ephraim Monroe Guffey (1777-1841), who married Sarah Underwood, highlight this Guffey connection with Alabama.

In this next section I will attempt to add census data about Ephraim Guffey taken from FamilySearch.org database:

• 1830, Image 37, Ephraim Guffey next to Constant Guffey, Wayne County KY, 1760-1770 for Ephraim.
• 1830, Image 31, Ephraim Guffey, Wayne County, KY, 1760-1770 for Ephraim. What might appear to be a duplicate entry may be evidence of two Ephraim Guffeys born about the same year, the one who resided in KY and the other, Ephraim Monroe Guffey, who moved to Alabama.
• 1840, Image 35, Ephraim Guffey, next to Constant Guffey, Clinton County KY, 1760-1770 for Ephraim.

Ephraim died in 1843 or 1845 and his wife, Sarah Denney, died in 1849, so the census entries for these two end here. I do not find any reference to Find A Grave for this couple but a memorial plaque exists and for the couple reads: Ephraim Guffey 1765-1843 MRD Sarah Denney, resided in Wayne and Clinton Cos., KY.

There were three Guffey marriages in Wayne Co. in 1803, one being the marriage of Ephraim and Sarah, 20 Jul 1803. Please refer to the Media section for one or two images of the three marriages.

Ephraim Guffey, Jr and his wife Nancy had 8 children: Anne, Ephraim (b. 1765), Mourning, Henry, Phoebe, Constantine, Richard, William.

Ephraim (b. 1765) married Sarah Denny/Denney.

Ephraim and Sarah's son, William (Mack) Guffey (1811-1893) married Richard and Phoebe's daughter, Phebe Lydia Guffey (1817-1893), and they are the parents of Martha (Patsy Cathy) Guffey Neal.
