History of Strafford, New Hampshire, 1995, p.15:
Joseph Holmes of Portsmouth was granted lot 16 of 150 acres in the first range. This lot was next above the land later purchased by Jethro Locke, and it was one of the four lots in town settled by the family to whom the land was granted. Joseph Holmes deeded this lot to his son Ephraim in 1748, at that time they were both from Rye.
Ephraim had his home on part of this lot where Chester Scruton lived much later. Ephraim had sold 20 acres of this lot 16 to Joseph Chapman, 32 acres to Noah Holmes and 52 acres to Ephraim Holmes Jr.; the remainder of his land which was his home he deeded to his daughter Phoebe Holmes Connell.
Ephraim Holmes was baptized in Portsmouth Oct. 29, 1710. He married Betty Libby, July 26, 1733, the daughter of Abraham Libby of Portsmouth. They had children: Ephraim Jr., Pheobe, b. Sept. 1, 1752, Noah? Joshua? And probably others.
Ephraim Holmes Jr. married Sarah Wentworth of Portsmouth. They had children, Samuel, b. Oct. 17, 1762; Ephraim b. Nov. 9, 1764, perhaps others.
Joshua Holmes, b. Dec. 3, 1739, married Abigail ---, b. Feb.4 1738. Their children were Susanna, b. Sept. 19, 1758, Joseph b. Jan. 16,1765, Joshua b. Jan. 17,1768, and Ephraim b. Sept. 19, 1769, perhaps others.
Phoebe Holmes married Ebenezer Connell, b. c. 1735 (Rev. Rolls, Vol. I, Page 115) died April 23, 1811. (Place's Journals). They lived next on the homestead. They had sons Ephraim and Ebenezer Jr., probably others. Ebenezer Connell Jr. with wife Betsy were next to live here. In 1820 he sold his farm to several neighbors, retaining the plot 4.1/2 rods square which had been given as a privilege for a schoolhouse, also used as a church and called the Temple. This building was moved May 3, 1837. In July of this same year he sold this plot, which was the last of his farm. The homes of Esther Henderson, Alexander Maglione, Peter Barube, Fred Tibbetts, and William S. Talvio are now on this lot. 16.[1970
Ephraim Holmes, Ephraim Holmes Jr., Joshua Holmes, and Noah Holmes signed the Association Test. Ebenezer Connell was a soldier in the Revolution. Ephraim held the following town offices: constable for the northern part of town, two years; selectman in 1759, which would make him the first selectman from the part of upper Barrington now Strafford. He was surveyor of highways, three years, and in 1769 he was one of the committee to choose a minister for the town.
