About Ernest Bechias Welker

Ernest Bechias Welker was the fifth child of John Eller Welker and his wife Sarah Ann Thornock. He was born in Safford, Arizona, in 1885, a couple of years after the family had relocated there from Bloomington, Bear Lake County, Idaho, in about 1883. His middle name, Bechias, was probably for his paternal great grandfather, Bechias Dustin, who was the father of Ernest's grandmother, Roxana Mahala Dustin Welker. It appears that Ernest never married, and worked as a farmer or farm laborer most of his life. He had a 5th grade education.

By about 1898 the family had returned to Idaho, not being satisfied with life in Safford, Arizona. In the 1900 U.S. Federal Census they were living in Wilford, Fremont, Idaho, and were listed as follows: John E., 46, Sarah A., 44, James M., 19, Estella A., 17, Ernest, 14, William, 11, Elzina, 9, Arthur, 6, and Lowell, 1 year old, having been born in June of 1898. Lowell was born in Idaho, Ernest, William, Elzina and Arthur in Arizona, and James and Estella in Idaho.

In the 1910 U.S. Federal Census for Fall River, Freemont, Idaho, Ernest B., 23, was living with his father, John E., 56, and mother, Sarah A., 54, and younger brothers, William E., 21, Arthur, 16, and Hyrum Lowell, 11. John was working as a farmer and owned his own farm free from a mortgage.

Ernest's father, John Eller Welker passed away in 1918, and in the 1920 U.S. Federal Census, Ernest was 35 years old, single, and living in Drummond, Fremont, Idaho, on the Main Road from Chester to Drummond, with his widowed mother, Saran Ann Thornock Welker, 63, and youngest brother, Lowell, 21. There was no occupation listed for either Ernest or Lowell, but their mother's occupation was listed as that of a farmer. Sarah owned her own home but had a mortgage. Sadly, she passed away the following year in 1921.

I don't know where Ernest was living in 1930, but Ernest was living alone in Fremont, Fall River, Idaho, in the 1940 census and was a single 55 year old farm laborer. For the 10 weeks he worked at that profession in the previous year of 1939, his income was $120.00. When he completed his U.S. World War II Draft Registration Card, in 1941, he was living in Winlock, Lewis, Washington, and named the person who would always know his address as his brother, Lowell Welker, Rt. 398, Winlock, Washington. Ernest was 56 years old at the time he completed the draft registration card.

Ernest passed away there on November 28, 1947, at the age of 62 years old. I do not know the cause of his death. His brother, Lowell, also passed away there on January 1, 1946, but I don't know the cause of his death either.
