Ervin William Rollins

Ervin William Rollins was born May 5, 1914, in Los Angeles County, California to parents Ervin Ephram and Lillian Earhuff Rollins who were married July 12, 1913, in Los Angeles County, California. In the 1920 U.S. Federal Census for Douglas, Cochise, Arizona, Ervin was 5 and one half years old, living with his parents, Ervin E., 32, and Lillian, 26, and his brother, Robert, 3. Ervin W. was born in California, but his brother was born in Arizona, and his father in Utah and mother in Minnesota. The family was living at 1530 21st Street, in a home they owned free from a mortgage. Ervin E. was working as a surveyor for a smelter. Next door was Ervin E's half-sister, Lyle, 23, and her husband, Lester Shannon, 25, and their children, Jay, 6, and Thomas, 4. Lyle was born in Arizona, her husband in Texas, and their children in Arizona. Lester was working as a shift boss in a smelter. They also owned their home free from a mortgage.

In the 1930 U.S. Federal Census for Whittier, Los Angeles County, California, Ervin, 15, was living with his parents, Ervin E., 42, and Lillian M., 36, and his brother and sister, Theron J. (or John Theron), 10, and Jewel C. 6 years old. Since his brother, Robert, born in 1917 in Arizona was not living in the home, he must have passed away, since he would have been only 13 years old in 1930. And since Jewel was born in California, the family must have returned to California from Arizona in about 1922 or 1923. The family was living at 440 North Washington Avenue in a home they were renting for $50 per month. They had a radio in their home. Ervin E. was working as a mechanical engineer in the gasoline industry.

By 1940, the family was living at 317 Court Street in Whittier, a home they owned valued at $3,300. Ervin, 52, Lillian, 47, Ervin, 25, J. Theron, 20, and Jewel C., 16 had the following levels of education: Ervin and Lillian, 4 years of high school, Ervin, 2 years of college, Theron, 1 year of college, and Jewel was in her second year in high school. Ervin was working as a plant operator in the gasoline production industry, Lillian was a nurse in a sanitarium, and Ervin W. was an aircraft repairman. In the year 1939, Ervin E. earned $1,800 and his son Ervin W., earned $1,200 in income.

Ervin William Rollins married Mary Louise Young in about 1942. In a 1945 U.S. City Directory Listing, E.W. and Mary Rollins were living at 1401 E. Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach, California. In a 1951 U.S. City Directory for Whittier, California, listed were Ervin William's parents, Ervin E. and Lillian M. living at 512 Rose Drive, and Ervin was working as an oil worker. Their daughter, Jewel C. was working as a nurse. In 1952 Ervin was listed as a plant operator for Standard Oil in Santa Fe Springs, and they were still living on Rose Drive. Living with them was John T. (who was probably their son, Theron J.) and he was working as an architect for Banico Gardens.

In 1952, Ervin William and Mary Louise Rollins were living at 290 Covina Avenue in Long Beach, and he was working as an inspector for North American Aviation. They were still living at 290 Covina Avenue in Long Beach in a 1955, and he was working as an assistant supervisor at North American Aviation. By 1957 he was a superintendent of North American Aviation and they were still living on Covina Avenue, and by 1962 they were still at the same address and Ervin W. was still a superintendent of North American Aviation.

In directories for 1955 and 1956, Ervin E. and Lillian Rollins were still living at 512 Rose Dr. There was also a Charles W. Rollins with his wife, Betty, living at 102 N. Painter Ave., Apt. 7, but I'm not sure if they were related. Ervin W.'s father, Ervin E., passed away October, 18, 1962, in Los Angeles County, California, but found no death records for Lillian, or Jewel.

Ervin William, who was born May 5,1914, passed away at the age of 90 years old on November 18, 2004, while living in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California. Previously in 1993 he had still been living at 290 Covina Avenue, Long Beach, California, 90803-1837. I found no death record for his wife Mary. Ervin W's brother, John Theron Rollins, passed away in 1997 while living in Orange County, California.
