About Esq. Samuel Saltonstall of Rooks & Huntwick

brief biography

From Find A Grave Memorial# 112169886 page 4

Samuel Saltonstall was the son and heir to Gilbert and Isabel. Samuel's father was a cloth merchant, originally from Halifax, co. Yorkshire, England. Gilbert and his forebears prospered and were able to buy much land in Hipperholme Twp.,during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries.

After his father's death, Samuel owned Rookes Hall and Huntwicke, Winteredge Hall at Hipperholme and Rogerthorpe in Badsworth. However, by 1612, Samuel was living primarily in Hull, having sold his property in Hipperholme to John Northend, his tenant. This particular property was later called Langley Hall and lost it's connection to the Saltonstall family.

Samuel married three wives: (1) Anne Ramsden, daughter of John Ramsden,Esq., ancestor of the Baronets Ramsden of Longley, near Huddersfield; (2) Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Ogden and (3) Elizabeth Armine, widow of Hugh Armine, mayor of Hull.

Anne was the mother of Sir Richard of Huntwick, Knight; baptized at Halifax, England, April 4, 1586 and lord of the manor at Ledsham.

Samuel was buried at Holy Trinity Church. It is considered one of the largest Anglican parish churches in England. It dates back to about 1300.

His will, dated 12/31/1612, was proved in York on 7/22/1613.

"The Saltonstalls had been seated at an estate called Rookes in Hipperholme adjoining North Ouram since the year 1565, when it was purchased by Gilbert Saltonstall of Halifax. His son, Samuel of Rookes, was the father of Sir Richard, who with Governor Winthrop and others got up the well-known expedition to New England in 1630. The inhabitants of North Ouram, Shelf, and Hipperholme were under the ministry of Coley Chapel, which was built by their joint contributions about the year 1500."

His [Samuel's] father, also Samuel Saltonstall, is stated in YAJ 13 (p. 215) to have been of Huntwick Grange, par. Wragby (and is stated to be of Huntwick in his licence to marry Elizabeth Armin - YAJ 11, p. 237), The family owned land in Rookes, par. Halifax, in Saltonstall, in Rogerthorpe par. Badsworth, and also Winteredge Hall at Hipperholme. His father’s brother Richard Saltonstall was Lord Mayor of London in 1597; his half-brother Sir Richard Saltonstall sold his lands in 1625 and emigrated with his family to New England; he left a legacy in his will to Harvard College.

Gilbert1 Saltonstall, of the Rooks, co. York, gent., who in his will, dated Nov. 24, 1598, proved at York, Jan. 7, 1598-9, mentions his wife Isabel and daughter Mary Savill, to whom he leaves £10 each; residue of goods and chattels to his son and executor Samuel Saltonstall. Mr. Wm. Ramsden, of Longley, and his brother-in-law Samuel Ashton, of Bissett, supervisors. No allusion is made to any other children, and it does not seem possible that he could have been the father of Sir Richard Saltonstall, the Lord Mayor of London, &c, as has been stated in Thoresby's Ducatus Leodienses,* seeing that the age of Sir Richard is given as 80 years at the time of his decease in March, 160^. In June, 1590, grant was made to Gilbert Saltonstall, the elder, Samuel his son, and Gilbert son of "id Samuel, of the parsonage of Arkesey, near Doucaster, co. York, for the term of their lives.

The will of this Gilbert Saltenstall, of the Rookes, gentleman, is worth recording. Watson states he purchased Rookes 8th Elizabeth (i565-6), and is accordingly mentioned of that place 37 Elizabeth (i594-5). His name "of Rookes " occurs as guardian of two of testator's children in the will of Richard Sunderland, of Highe Sunderland, i573. His will was made 23rd November, 1598, and proved 9th January, 1598-9.
"I give towards the repaire and mayntenance of the p'ish church of Hallifax, whereof it pleased god to make me a p'ishon' the some of xxs."
"Also, I give to the poore people of the towneshipp of Hyppholme, ten poundes to be paid to them in ten yeares next after my death, viz. ev'y yeare xx«, to be duliv'ed to them at my house at the Rookes ev'y xpenmas even, during the said ten yeares."
He left 20s. to the poor of Halifax, and also bequeathed to the poor of the parish of Wragbye \0s.; to his wife Isabel i0/. and to his daughter Mary Savile i0/. in full satisfaftion of all "her filiale <fe childes part. Itm I give towardes the repairs of the chappell of Hipp'holme, otherwise called the East feild chappell or Lightliff chappell xx«."
He appointed his son Samuel, residuary legatee and executor, and Mr. William Ramsden, of Longley, and his brother-in-law Samuel Ashton, of Bissett, supervisors. Thomas Walker was one of the witnesses.

comment: the book editor names Sir Richard, Lord Mayor of London, as this Gilbert's son. He was not & the editor mistaken.
