The refugee Daniel des Ruelles reached the Cape in 1688 with his young daughters Esther and Anne. He was married on July 12, 1671 at Guines to Anne Goudalle and their daughter Esther was born in the town on November 6 of the following year.

Ester des Ruelles, geboren te Guînes (62) op 6 november 1672, gedoopt aldaar op 20 november 1672 (doopgetuigen waren Henry Hurel en Marie Goudalle), dochter van Daniel des Ruelles en Anne Goudalle.

Estienne of Blois, arrived in 1688 in the Voorschooten; then a bachelor, aged 23 years, and described as a wagonmaker. In the 1690 Fund he appears as " Estienne Bruere and his espoused Esther de Ruelle," a daughter of Daniel de Ruelle, q.v. Estienne Bruere signed himself as Bruere.
