About Esther Lucile Fitch
Esther Lucile Swallen was born on April 18, 1902 in Pyeng Yang, Korea. She is the fourth child of the Rev. William Leander Swallen and Sarah "Sallie" Willison.
Esther's parents were missonaries in Korea. She lived in North Korea from birth till college. Her family lived in former Korean government building that was refurbished for her family. It was at the top of a hill that was originally barren. Through the efforts of her father, this barren hillside was transformed into a place of beauty adorned with trees, flowers and bushes. Her elementary education was at the mission school.
Hugh Richardson Fitch and Esther Lucile Swallen were married in New York City, NY on 23 Dec 1929, at the Presbyterian Biblical Seminary. Both were children of Presbyterian Missionary Parents. Esther came from Honolulu, where she was teaching at a bible school, and Hugh from Maryland, where he was teach at the Naval Academy.
Hugh and Esther lived near Anapolis Maryland till 1933 Esther was a resident of Leonia, New Jersey. She was cremated and her ashes were flown to Iowa to be buried with her husband. Inscription: FITCH ESTHER S. HUGH R. 1902-1970 1894-1969
