OBITUARY: Eunice Sorlien Chomicz, 1941-2005

A funeral service for Eunice Sorlien Chomicz was held in Hesper, Iowa on June 22, 2005. Pastor Paul Sorlien officiated. Interment was in Hesper Lutheran Cemetery. A Memorial Service for Eunice was held at St. Barnabas Church in Chicago on June 28, 2005. Eunice, age 63, died June 19, 2005 in Chicago, Illinois after a short battle with cancer.

Eunice Sorlien Chomicz was born July 27, 1941 to Rev. and Mrs. S.O. Sorlien. She lived in Rake, Decorah and Osage, Iowa; Hayward and Crystal Lake, Minn. She attended Luther College one year, University of Minnesota, one year and Minnesota Art Institute.

She married Tom Chomicz in 1963 and they lived in St. Paul, Minnesota while Tom completed his law degree. In 1969 they moved to Chicago where he began his law career.

As she was a stay at home mother for her six children, she did volunteer work at St. Ignatius College Prep School for 20 years. She was given the Golden Rose Award, the highest honor for volunteers.

She volunteered in the City of Chicago's Alternative Policing Strategy where she coordinated the CAPS program with 22nd District Chicago police commander. She became the chairperson of the Court Watch program, arranging for volunteers to attend court proceedings in support of various victims of crimes.

In 1997 the Chicago Province Jesuits asked her to serve as copy editor, writer, photographer and managing editor of the Jesuit Magazine. She managed freelance writers and photographers and worked with the design team.

She was a patron of the arts and theater, supporting the Beverly Art Center as well as a member of the Beverly Area Planning Association. Just prior to cancer diagnosis, she had accepted a position on the Development Advisory Council of the Chicago Province Jesuits.

Preceding Eunice in death were her parents and parents-in-law.

She is survived by her husband Tom Chomicz; children Susan, Dallas, Texas; Tony, Chicago, Illinois; Carrie, St. Paul, Minnesota; Leslie, San Diego, California; John (Lynne) Chicago, Illinois; Elisabeth, Chicago, Illinois; brothers: John Sorlien, (Ann) Portland, Oregon; Pastor Paul Sorlien, (Sandra) Underwood, Iowa; sisters Naomi (Leroy) Jasmer; Grace (Norbert) Johnson, St. Ansgar, Iowa; Ruth (Red) Larson, Austin, Minn., and Lois Fossen, Minnetonka, Minn.
