Mrs. Hitchcock had been confined to her bed for the past 14 months and her condition had been serious most of that time.
She was born in South Hero, Vt., January 10, 1840, a daughter of Heman and Phoebe Chellis Phelps. She was the oldest one of five children born to Mr. and Mrs. Phelps and all have preceded her in death. Her father was troubled with asthma and it was necessary for the family to move away from the lake, they coming to Bombay when Mrs. Hitchcock was a young woman.
She married Reuben Hitchcock of Bombay, on July 4, 1859 and for a number of years they resided at Racket River where they conducted a general store, moving from that place to Cornwall where they resided for 17 years. When the power canal was started in 1897, they moved to Massena and for several years conducted a grocery store, first on North Main Street and later on Center Street. Mr. Hitchcock died in 1909, and the funeral services being held on New Year's day in 1910.
Since Mr. Hitchcock's death, Mrs. Hitchcock has been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Summers, North Allen Street.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. A.W. Allen, of Wallingford, Vt., and Mrs. Summers, Massena; three sons, Wilbur R. Hitchcock, of Cornwall, Ont., Erven H. Hitchcock, of Detroit, Mich., and Milo J. Hitchcock, of Brockville, Ont. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Mrs. Hitchcock was a member of the Massena Methodist Episcopal church and Rev. Barber L. Waters, pastor of that church, conducted the funeral services at the home Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock. Burial was made beside her husband in Pine Grove cemetery.
