DALLAS CENTER -- A service for Evelyn Bechtel Black, 82, of Dallas Center was held Aug. 3, 1983 at the Church of the Brethren at Dallas Center with burial in the Brethren Cemetery. Mrs. Black died July 31. She was born on Feb. 18, 1901 to Martin L. and Emma Waters Bechtel of Dallas Center. Her mother died four months later and an aunt and uncle, Andrew and Lydia Bechtel raised her. Mrs. Black graduated from Drake University with a degree in mathematics and taught school for 25 years at Dallas Center, Perry, Paton, Rippey, Washington Township, Herrold and Granger Parochial. She later tutored two Vietnamese children in the English language. She married Dawson G. Black of Independence on July 20, 1939 and they lived at Dallas Center. She was a member of the Dallas Center Church of the Brethren and composed the church's centennial history book.
