About Even K Rowberg

Eivind (age 19) and his brother Gregard (a year or so younger) emigrated from Norway to America in 1869 landing in Quebec. Reportedly Eivind did not get sea-sick and liked being on board ship.

In the late 1870's Eivind Rauberg (an earlier spelling of the name) purchased the west 1/2 of the SW 1/4 in section 22 of Sandnes from the Winona and St. Peter Railroad for the sum of $400. A year or so later, he also purchased the east 1/2 of the SW 1/4, giving him a total of 160 acres of land. The name Edward K. Edwards was used on the warranty deeds. In 1884, he purchased the east half of his father's homestead, described as the east 1/2 of the NW 1/4 of section 22. He paid $300 for this parcel, and his holdings then totaled 240 acres. He later acquired 80 more acres adjoining the 240 acres he already owned.

Eivind used the name Edward K. Edwardson when he applied for citizenship at New Ulm, Minnesota. He petitioned the court to change his name to Rowberg in 1900 at Granite Falls, Minnesota.

In 1913 Even (as he was finally known) leased his farm to his sons Conrad and Jens and retired to Hanley Falls where he built a "Sears Roebuck" house that still stands. During the same year he made a trip to Norway, but the trip was a disappointment. The people had changed, and most of those he knew had emigrated to America. His return trip was aboard the HMS Mauritania, sister ship to the Lusitania.
