Member of The Richmond Grays, Company A of the 1st Virginia Volunteers (later Company G of the 12th). The company was called into service in 1859, before the war began. It was ordered to Harpers Ferry to help capture John Brown and later went to Charlestown, Virginia to witness his hanging. When the war began, the Grays went to Norfolk on detached service, where they became part of the Virginia 12th.
