About Fernando di Borbone-Due Sicilie y Borbón, infante de España

  • Infante Ferdinand of Spain ; Prince Ferdinand of the Two Sicilies (Spanish: Fernando de Borbón-Dos Sicilias y Borbón, French: Ferdinand de Deux-Siciles; 6 March 1903 – 4 August 1905) was a member of the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies and an Infante of Spain. He was the second and youngest son of Prince Carlos of Bourbon-Two Sicilies and his Spanish wife, Infanta Mercedes, former Princess of Asturias. He was a brother of Infante Alfonso, future Duke of Calabria and Infanta Isabel Alfonsa, future Countess Zamoyska.

Biography

  • Born in 1903 in Madrid, the young Infante was the cousin of the reigning monarch of Spain, Alfonso XIII of Spain. As there had been a period when his father had no male heirs, his mother was the former Princess of Asturias. Ferdinand was actually baptised Ferdinand Maria Anthony Alfonso Charles Frederick Igancio Olegario (Spanish: Fernando María Antonio Alfonso Carlos Federico Ignacio Olegario). Although born a Prince of the Two Sicilies, his father had renounced his rights to the throne of the Two Sicilies (actually his family consisted of pretenders; the Two Sicilies were then part of the Kingdom of Italy). Thus, although a Prince of the Two Sicilies by birth and title, Ferdinand was actually in line to inherit the Spanish throne, a legacy his mother left him with.
  • In 1904, his mother died while giving birth to her only daughter. After this incident, first in line for the throne was Ferdinand's brother Alfonso; although he was never made Prince of Asturias because it was expected that Alfonso XIII would get married and have issue (this indeed happened, as Alfonso married Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg and had many children). [edit] Death
  • During the family vacation at the Palace of Miramar in San Sebastián, the Infante fell ill and died after a series of seizures. He was buried in the Pantheón de Infantes in El Escorial.
