Zeeburg was above all intended for poor Jews who couldn’t afford the cost of a grave. It was also the place where people were buried when they died on a Friday or Jewish festival, or the day before one of these. The funeral procession to the cemetery at Muiderberg would be with a horse and cart and then by barge. This was so time-consuming it couldn’t take place on high days and holidays. But Zeeburg lay much nearer the city.
By the 20th century, Zeeburg was filled, and a new cemetery at Diemen was consecrated. In 1958 a large part of the Jewish Cemetery Zeeburg was relocated to Diemen, due to city of Amsterdam expansion (a smaller part was added to the Flevopark). Three fields, all called Field Z, with 28,000 graves and almost no individual stones, were brought over. A memorial stone explains the origin of Field Z. Some smaller stones alongside these Fields Z are placed.
