About Flora Jarrard

Flora Salva was listed with her parents and siblings in the 1880 U.S. Federal Census living in Ford River, Delta County, Michigan, as follows: Hercules, 41, Marguerite, 33, Emma, 16, Olive, 13, Flora, 9, and Laura, 8 years old. Her father was born about 1839 in Canada, and was listed as a camp boss in the census record. Her mother was Margaret or Marguerite Bergeon, who was born about 1845 in Wisconsin.

According to Michigan Marriage Records, Flora Salva, born in 1870 in Michigan, married John or Charles Elias Bodin on April 20, 1885, in Escanaba, Michigan. He was 28 years old and she was 15 years old. He was born in Canada and she in Michigan. He had been living in Escanaba, and she in Bark River. Charles was listed as a saloon keeper. Their witnesses were August Beauchamp and Olive Salva, probably Flora's older sister. Flora and John or Charles had two daughters, Eva, born in 1889, and Hazel born in 1893.

However, by April 5, 1895, Flora had married Thomas Douglas, and in the 1900 census they were living in Seattle, King County, Washington, and were listed as Thomas, 42, Flora was 28, and her daughters, Eva Boda, 11, and Hazel Boda, 7. Thomas was working as a restaurant cook. However, in a 1902 Seattle, Washington, City Directory, Flora was listed as the widow of Thomas, and she was working as a dressmaker and living at 523 Pontius Avenue. However, Thomas did not pass away until 1930, so Flora and Thomas must have been separated or divorced.

Flora's daughter Eva Beaudin married William Kelly September 13, 1905, in Pierce County, Washington, and a King County, Washington, Delayed Birth record for Florence Elizabeth Kelly shows that her parents were Eva Margarite Boda and William A. Kelly, and that Florence was born February 4, 1908, in Seattle, Washington.

Eva, listed as Eveline M. Kelly, married Charles P. Anderson August 1, 1911, in King County, Washington. At the time she was 21, born in Michigan, the daughter of John Boda and Florence (Flora) Salva, and Eveline had already been married twice when she married Charles P. Anderson. In the 1920 census, Eva was listed as Evelyn Anderson, 29, and her husband, Charles, 32, and her daughter, Florence, 11. Charles was working as a Stevedore for a shipping company and they were living at 1323 14th Avenue in Seattle, Washington.

At the time of Eva's death on May 30, 1931, she was just 41 years old, was living in Seattle, Washington, having been born February 13, 1890, in Delta County, Michigan, and according to her Find A Grave.com memorial, she was the daughter of John Beaudin and Flora Salva. Eva was buried in the Calvary Cemetery in Seattle.

Flora's daughter, Hazel, married Alexander Fogel and they had a child named Margaret, however on December 10, 1916, in King County, Washington, Hazel Fogel married Malcolm B. Kehrer. In 1920 Malcolm, 28, and Hazel, 26, were living on 13th Avenue South in Seattle, and Malcolm was working as a bookkeeper for a logging company, but Margaret was not living with them at the time. They were still living in Seattle in 1930, Malcolm, 38, and Hazel, 36, and Malcolm was working as a logger at a logging camp. They were renting their home for $20 per month.

However, they must have divorced because on June 21, 1932, Hazel Kehrer married Sylvester Maestri. The witness of her marriage was her mother, Flora Jarrard. Hazel Maestri, 47, was listed with Sylvester, 55, in the 1940 census for Seattle and they were living at 3409 17th Avenue South, and he was working as a cutlery sharpener in his own shop. Hazel L. Maestri married Thomas M. Dougherty April 23, 1956, in King County, Washington, and her place of birth was listed as Escabana, Michigan, and her witnesses were Florence Brown, probably her sister Eva's daughter, Florence, and Olive Humphrey, possibly her mother's sister. Hazel was 63 and Thomas was 62 years old.

Flora had married Andrew C. Jarrard January 22, 1914, in Grays Harbor, Washington. When Andy completed his U.S. World War I Draft Registration Card on September 13, 1918, he was living at 1323 14th Avenue South, in Seattle, Washington, with his wife Flora, and he was working as a cook in Olympia, Washington. However, sometime before 1930 they must have divorced or separated, because in 1930 Andy was married to Naomi Lenore Madsen and they were listed in the census in Yakima, Washington as Andy, 46, and Naomi L., 35, and he was working as a cook at a hotel. Flora was listed in a 1936 Seattle City Directory as the widow of Andrew and was living at 1107 Howell Avenue, Apartment Q, but he did not pass away until 1954.

Flora Salva Jarrard died at the age of 65 on November 28, 1936, in Seattle, Washington. Interesting is the fact that there was a Yakima, Washington, marriage record dated June 19, 1917, showing that Flora H. Mann (nee Salva), 45, was married to Albert J. Villaume, 48, and that she was the daughter of Hercules Salva and Margaret Bergeon and he was the son of Joseph Villaume and Sophie Thomas. She was born in Michigan and he in Minnesota. It was listed as the 2nd marriage for both of them.

Although since Flora had previously been married at least 3 or 4 times, this would have been her 5th marriage. I don't know why her name was listed as "Mann" since I did not find a marriage record for her marrying anyone with that surname, although it's possible that she was married to Robert Mann, because a 1910 U.S. City Directory for Seattle showed her as Flora, widow of Robert Mann, living at 523 Pontius Avenue, which is where she was living in 1902 when she was working as a dressmaker after she separated from her husband Thomas Douglas. Her daughter Hazel was also living with her at that time and was listed in the directory as a student.

It also appears that Flora married Wallace James Becker because he was living in Seattle at 523 Pontius Avenue in 1910, and he and Flora are listed in a 1913 U.S. City Directory listing as Wallace J. Becker with wife Flora, and they were living at 1411 5th Avenue, and he was working as a tailor. Seems to make sense, a tailor and a dressmaker!

A death notice was found for Flora's mother in the Escanaba Morning Press dated October 4, 1911, as follows: WILL ARRIVE HERE TODAY FOR FUNERAL: A telegram was received in the city yesterday that Mrs. Flora Douglas of Seattle, Washington, daughter of the late Mrs. Margaret Salva, who died suddenly at her home here on Saturday, will arrive in Escanaba this morning. Mrs. Douglas left her home immediately after receiving word of the death of her mother and has made the long trip across the continent in record time. Funeral services over the body of Mrs. Salva will be conducted at St. Anne's church at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning. Rev. Father Menard officiating. Interment will be at St. Anne's Cemetery.

The above death notice was found on Ancestry.com and the person who posted it there on July 20, 2014, with a user name of "rjbwerner" stated the following: The October 4, 1911, death notice for Margaret Salva, mother of Flora Boda Douglas. Flora was the wife of John Boda (Beaudin). They divorced in 1894. She remarried Tom Douglas and moved to Washington. This article helps clarify the connection to the daughters of John and Flora, Eva and Hazel Boda of Washington State to the Escanaba, Michigan, Boda's.

Previously in the 1850 census for Kankanlin, Brown County, Wisconsin, Flora's mother, Margaret Bergeron, was 5 years old, living with her father, John B. Bergeron, 29, and mother, Mary, 26, and Margaret's sisters, Philomen, 6, and Olive, 2 years old. John was born in 1821 in Canada, and Mary was born in 1824 in Canada. Mary's maiden name was Tebo or Thibault.

In 1860 the family was listed in Appleton, Wisconsin, as follows: John, 41, Maria T., 34, Clementine, 16, (probably Philomen), Margaret, 15, Olivia, 12, John, 8, Louis, 7, and George, 2 years old. Also living in their home was Marcellus Tebeau, 24, probably Mary's younger brother, and Joseph Shoyer, 19, an apprentice blacksmith, who was probably apprenticed to John Bergeron, who was working as a blacksmith.

By 1900 Margaret Salva's husband Hercules had passed away in 1899, and she was a 53-year old widow living in Escanaba, Michigan, with her daughters, Mamie, 18, (probably Laura) and Olive Duhesne, 32, who was widowed. The census showed Olive had given birth to 6 children, but none were still living at the time.

But by 1910, Maggie, 64, was living with her daughter, Olive, who had remarried in 1908 and was listed as Olive Gagnon, 44, and her husband, Paul Gagnon, 40, and their 1 year old daughter, Geneva. They were living in Escanaba, Michigan. Olive had given birth to 7 children but only 1 was living, Geneva. Maggie had given birth to 9 children, 5 of whom were still living. Paul was working as a foreman at a camp, probably a logging camp. Margaret or Maggie passed away the following year on September 30, 1911. The correct spelling of Paul's surname was probably Gagnier.

Flora's daughter, Hazel, lived at least until 1956, but I found no death record for her. Hazel's daughter, Margaret Fogel, born in Seattle, Washington, August 2, 1910, lived a long life and died at the age of 81 on September 10, 1991, in Seattle, Washington. It appears as though Margaret Fogel never married, which was probably a good thing considering the numerous marriages of her mother, grandmother and aunt!
