Spent her final years with her son Ulrich Philip Mayer in Grahamstown, South Africa, living with him and his family in their spacious home at 1 Prince Alfred St.

She suffered from diabetes in her old age, which resulted in double leg amputations, but she was remarkable for her courage and good humour through everything. She died in a nearby hospital in Port Elizabeth on 15 July 1962.

She had 2 sons born in Berlin : Peter who predeceased her, dying in exile from the Nazis in Malvern, and Ulrich Philip Mayer, who was a Professor of Anthropology at various universities, and died in Oxford in 1995.
