Washington, D. C.—(Special) Services were held at 2 p.m. Jan. 9, at the Presbyterian Home, 1818 Newton St., nw., for Florence Hughes Darby, 87, founder of-the interdenominational Women's Missionary Institute. Mrs. Darby died at the Presbyterian Home after suffering a heart attack. A native of Ohio, Mrs. Darby had lived in Washington for some-80 years. She was the widow of Rev. Dr. William F. Darby, who had served as executive secretary of- the Washington Federation ot Churches from 1922-40. Mrs. Darby, who dnee said that church work was the "greatest work" that women cculd do for this country, was a former chairman of the Women's Association of th* Presbyterian Church. She also helped organize the Washington Council of Church Women. Three grandchildren survive: Ralph E. Wiber of Raleigh, N. Ci Elizabeth Wiber Pierce of Greenville, Tenn., and Janet Wiber Middleton of Southbridge, Mass. She also is survived by three greatgrandchildren. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery. Dr. and Mrs. Darby lived in Ogdensburg for several years and both became well known as they were active in church and social affairs. They occupied apartments at the corner of Ford and Franklin St. R. E. Wiber, the late OFA principal, was Mrs. Darby's son by an earlier marriage.
