About Florence May Parks
Florence was born in Washington, D.C., to Sadie Yount and William Evans. When she was born the family lived at 9th and D S.W., but after the death of her grandfather, Lewis Cass White, the family moved to his home on Georgia Avenue. Florence attended Brightwood School and Central High. She received a B.A. degree in Romance Languages from American University in 1935. She attended the Washington School for Secretaries and held various positions at the D.C. School Department and the National Archives before her marriage in 1941 to Joe Parks, a Cherokee from Oklahoma whom she met at a church picnic. Joe and Florence were the parents of two children, Anne and Kathryn. Florence was an accomplished pianist. She played with a weekly group of music makers for more than 20 years. Joe and Florence retired to New Hampshire in 1975. Florence died in 1999 and is buried at Pine Hill Cemetery in Dover, N.H.
