Francis Marion Burgess

FRANCIS MARION BURGESS WAS ATTACKED BY BUSHWHACKERS AT HIS HOME.THEY CAPTURED HIM AND LED HIM AWAY ON HIS HORSE,SHOT HIM IN THE HEAD AND TOOK HIS HORSE.HE DID NOT DIE ,BUT WAS BLINDED .WHEN HIS SON RANDY CAME HOME FROM THE WAR HE WENT LOOKING FOR THE BUSHWHACKERS AND KILLED 26-28 OF THEM IN REVENGE OF HIS FATHER.FRANCIS WAS MARRIED 2 TIMES AND HAD 18 CHILDREN.

MAPLE CEMETERY

Maple Cemetery is one of the oldest Cemeteries in constant us in Sequoyah County. Originally known as the Court House Cemetery because the Sequoyah County District, Cherokee Nation, Courthouse was adjacent to the cemetery. The name was retained for several years after the courthouse was moved to the community of Maple. In later years the Cemetery took the name of the communtiy.To visit the cemetery from Muldrow take State Highway 64B north for 6 miles turn left on the black topped road at the four corners. Follow this road west two and one half miles. At the second road right (North) turn right and follow that road to the cemetery gate. From a mile south of four corners there are signs pointing the way. Decoration at Maple Cemetery is the third Sunday in May.
