About Francis Dade
Captain Francis Dade and his cousin Baldwin, served in the Revolution, and were at Valley Forge. Francis married Sarah Taliaferro, daughter of Col. Lawrence Taliaferro of Rose Hill. Francis received 4000 acres of Bounty Land for his service in the Revolution, which eventually passed to his children. Captain Francis Dade was an uncle (via his brother Townsend) of Major Francis Langhorne Dade, who was killed in the "Dade Massacre" during the Seminole War, and subsequently became the namesake of Dade County Florida, and Dade County Georgia. Francis and Townsend were sons of Cadwallader Dade. It is difficult to tell from available records, exactly which Cadwallader Dade was their father, as there were several of the same name, near the same age, in the same area, who were closely related. Some researchers have concluded that Cadwallader (the father of "this Francis") was the son of Langhorne Dade (son of Townsend Dade & Elizabeth Alexander) and Mildred Washington, but evidence leans more towards this Francis being the son of the "elder Cadwallader" (son of Francis Dade and Francis Townsend). This "elder Cadwallader" was first married to Sarah Alexander, who had no children, and predeceased him. He had children by his 2nd wife, who had previously been widowed, and whose name after her previous marriage was Sarah Berryman. She is thought to have been born a Taliaferro. The diary of Reverend Richard Rose suggests that she was the daughter of Richard Taliaferro and Rose Berryman. Rose was a cousin of Sarah's previous husband, Gilson Berryman. Sarah married again after the death of Cadwallader Dade, to Nehemiah Rodham Mason (1762). In Dec. of 1798, the dower of Sarah Mason, formerly Sarah Dade, was divided between her son Townsend, and the children of her deceased son, Francis (subject of this sketch).
