About Francis Hayden

Immigrated 1669

"Francis Hayden was the progenitor of the Hayden family of St. Mary's County, Maryland. He emigrated into the province, bringing his wife, Tomasine and children, Penelope and Mary.

"In 1678, he provided his right to 200 acres for bringing in his family, as Lord Baltimore gave 50 acres to every settler who came into the residence of two years or more, and his son William not on the list of children brought into the province, it is conclusive that William was born in Maryland, and according to his own deposition, he was born in 1675. From this deposition, it would appear that Francis Hayden brought his family into Maryland about 1675, both from Herfordshire, England. Francis Hayden settled in St. Mary's County, Maryland, where he died in 1697, leaving his property both real and personal to his wife, Tomasine Butler Hayden."

Francis Hyden, born 1628 and baptized August 14, 1628 in Watford, Hertfordshire, England came to America and settled in Maryland. Francis married Thomasine Butler had two daughters and a son William. Francis died in 1694 testate (see Wills 6 p 134) leaving his wife, Thomasine executrix and sole legatee.

Thomasine's will (Wills 11 fol 305) dated Sep 19, 1701 proved Nov 27, 1702 devised to her loving son William and his heirs the tract of land I now live on called "Small Hopes".

William Hyden was 49 in 1723 , hence born in 1674. His father Francis, seemed to spell the name Heyden, but his wife's will shows Hayden, which became (and remains) the usual spelling in Maryland.
