Francis Hugh Forbes Irvine, 21st of Drum was born on 23 August 1854.2 He was the son of Alexander Forbes Irvine, 20th of Drum and Anna Margaretta Forbes.2 He married Mary Agnes Ramsay of Barra and Straloch, daughter of John Ramsay of Barra and Leonora Sophia Bond, on 18 November 1880.1 He died on 25 July 1894 at age 39.2

He was educated at Winchester College, Winchester, Hampshire, EnglandG.2 He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)2 He was admitted to Inner Temple entitled to practise as a barrister.2 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)2
