About Francis Rogers, III
Of Cork - Journal of the Cork Historical and Archaeological Society.
Baptised in St James, Bristol, on 23 Jan. 1632 - England & Wales, Christening Index, 1530-1980. This date has also been given as that of his birth in Cork, but it seems very unlikely that he should have been born in Cork and brought to Bristol for baptism.
England & Wales, Quaker Birth, Marriage, and Death Registers, 1578-1837, gives his burial in Bristol as 20th of the 1st month (i.e. March) 1694. It can therefore be assumed that he died in Bristol.
The marriages of Francis Rogers are difficult to understand. C. M. Tenison in the Journal of the Cork Historical and Archaeological Society, vol. II (1896) states that Robert Rogers MP was son of Francis Rogers by a daughter of Joseph Pike, and that George Rogers MP was his brother and the second son. Quaker records in Cork show Francis Rogers marrying Elisabeth Erberry (first wife) on the 25th of 7th month 1660 in Cork. This is too late for the births of Robert and George: perhaps it means that Elisabeth was the first wife within the Quaker community. Quaker records in Cork also show Francis Rogers marrying Jane Dring of London in 1666. There are also Quaker records for Francis Rogers marrying Catherine Donien in Youghal in 1684, but perhaps this is another Francis Rogers.
Testamentary statement of Francis, Cork, 28 Jan. 1688, being processed 16 Jul. 1694: "“If it should happen I should dye without making any Will I leave it wholly to my Brothers William and George Rogers to dispose of my Estate to my wife and children desiring they will be be very kind and Brotherly to my wife and dispose of such a part to her as that she may live comfortably as is fit to my wife and to leave as much to my sons as to two of my daughters and to make noe difference between my children by this wife than my other children only respecting their age. Fra Rogers. 13th. July Ano. Dno 1694. Which day appeared personally Robert Rogers of the Citty of Corke senior Aldn. Natural and lawful Brother of the said Francis Rogers deceased and William Masters of the same Citty Merchant and being sworn upon the holy Evangelists made oath and deposed that they very well knew and were acquainted with Mr. Francis Rogers formerly of Corke in the Kingdom but lately of the City of Bristol Mercht. deceased” - Prerogative Court of Canterbury Wills, 1384-1858.
An attempt is made at https://zohariststories.blogspot.com/2019/09/the-kassinkissane-fami... to identify Francis Rogers with a crypto-Jew Francisco Kassin Rodriguez. No sources are given and the story is full of implausibilities to anyone with a knowledge of Irish history. The supposed family tree is also at https://gw.geneanet.org/tdowling?lang=en&pz=timothy+michael&nz=dowl.... The Kassin family is mentioned at https://www.manfredlehmann.com/sieg292.html, but without any mention of Francisco or of Irish connections.
