Francois Swart (1997 - 2019)
Brief overview:
Francois (22), a security guard, was shot in a hail of bullets, during an armed robbery, whilst transporting gold in an armoured vehicle, on the R21 Highway near Griffiths Road, Jet Park, on 18th March 2019. He was transferred in a critical condition to the Glynwood Hospital in Benoni. Francois was declared brain dead the following day at 07h15, 19th March 2018.
Police say that over 100 shots were fired into the vehicle he was driving, after 10 heavily armed males followed him from a refinery in Crown Mines and were taking the gold to another refinery in Germiston.
Constable Justice Ramaube of the Boksburg North police said Francois and his colleague, Dale Collins, were supposed to take the Germiston off-ramp, but ended up travelling all the way on the N12, attempting to escape the hijackers, before ending up on the R21. The hijackers, who were in two vehicles, were firing shots at the armoured vehicle for the majority of the chase. Francois was shot in the head and right hand, and lost control of the car. The hijackers blocked the road with their cars, took Francois's and Dale's weapons, and dragged Dale out of the vehicle.
The hijackers were unable to lift the box of gold because it was too heavy, and a short while later the police arrived, and they fled in their vehicles. According to Ramaube, the gold was estimated to be worth R5 million.
