About Frank Hyde
Frank was a veteran of the Union Army in the Civil War, where he served as a Sergeant in a Wisconsin regiment. He was a large man__6' 4" in height and 240 lbs in weight.
He later became a world champion rifleman. His score in a 1901 match against Ireland was the highest ever in a rifle match (as of 1920). He was a member of two teams that scored victories over England, the first in 1876, the second in 1879, and in one of these he received the championship medal from the hands of Queen Victoria.
He died in a sleighing accident at his home near Peekskill on February 4, 1920, at age 83 years.
