Glenn "Spin" McClaskey, 94, of Ellensburg and prominent businessman of Ellensburg and Goldendale, died Tuesday morning, October 5, 2004, at his home, following an extended illness.
He was born on October 15, 1909, to James and Minnie (Hill) McClaskey in Cincinnati, Ohio. The family later moved to Arlington, Oregon, where he grew up and received his early education. As a 16 year old lad, Spin and his older brother, Todd worked in a service station in Arlington. In 1929, they purchased the station, which they operated until the late 30's. He and his brother, John owned and operated the Horn Tavern for several years. In 1936, he married June L. Hurt at The Dalles, Oregon.
In 1940, they moved to Goldendale, where he purchased the Town Tavern, which he operated until enlisting in the U.S. Army on September 10, 1943, where he served with the 143rd Infantry Regiment in the Rhineland and Central European Theatres, where he received the Purple Heart. Following his honorable discharge on November 21, 1945, he returned to Goldendale. He owned and operated the Simcoe Restaurant and Cocktail Lounge in Goldendale and he later opened Mac's Cafe. In the early 50's, he and Trip started the Corral Restaurant and Lounge in Yakima. Spin's business adventures continued with partner Loren Schademan, by opening the Red Lion in Pasco, Washington and in Pendleton, Oregon. They later sold their interest to Spin's brother, Tod McClaskey.
In 1964, he married Clare Bush Christiansen in Ellensburg. In 1965, he opened the Thunderbird Motel and Restaurant, which he operated until the early 90's. He also owns the King City Truck Stop in Pasco and three ranches in the Goldendale area.
While growing up in a family of five brothers and two sisters, Spin was very active in various sporting events and he excelled in boxing. He participated in many boxing smokers around Arlington and Portland. Another of the neighborhood lads was Doc Severson, the trumpet player on the Johnny Carson Show.
Spin can be characterized as being a tough guy with a 'Big Heart', throughout the years he helped many people. When his son and daughter were growing up and following college years, he was always there supporting them in whatever they were involved in. He helped organize boxing smokers in the Goldendale School and served as his son's second. As his son's baseball talents took him to the Pittsburg and later the White Sox's baseball organization, Spin and his brother Todd drove to games regardless of where his son was playing. Spin had a tremendous love and support for his family, children, grandchildren and extended family.
He was Baptized in the St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Ellensburg, past member of the Ellensburg Chamber of Commerce, Ellensburg Hotel/Motel Association, Ellensburg Restaurant Association, and a great supporter of the Ellensburg Rodeo. Fifty-five year member of the BPOE, Eks Lodge in Ellensburg and a fifty year member of the American Legion in Goldendale.
