Frederic Vaillancourt

Fred Vaillancourt was born in 1873 in Eagle Lake, Maine, just across the river from the province of Québec. He spent his life in a town where everyone spoke French, but nevertheless, he seems to have gotten tired of his surname, which was difficult to spell. Early on, he called himself Fred Viancour, but beginning with the 1920 census, he had switched to Fred Smart. Some of his children adopted the Smart name, but others retained the Vaillancourt, although they didn't all agree on how to spell it.

Fred was a farmer.

He married Marie Gagnon in 1896 and they had four daughters, but she died in 1904.

He married Agnes Plourde around 1904, and they had 13 children.
