Frederick Augustus Cockling was a United States Representative from New York during the American Civil War, and a postbellum banker, insurance company executive, and writer.

U.S. Congressman. He attended the Albany Academy and was successful in mercantile pursuits in New York City. He was a member of the New York State Assembly, (1854, 1859, 1860) and organized the 84th Regiment, New York Volunteer. In 1861, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-seventh Congress, serving until 1863. During the Civil War, he was a Colonel in command of 84th Infantry, Union Army, serving throughout the Shenandoah Valley and Pennsylvania campaigns. After the war, he was one of the organizers of the West Side Savings Bank of New York City and served as president of the Aetna Fire Insurance Company, until 1880. He was also the author of numerous pamphlets on political, commercial and scientific subjects.
