About Frederick Bicknell
Frederick was the third son and youngest child of Alfred and Emma. After leaving school he started an apprenticeship as a Iron moulder.
At 20 Frederick met and married Mary on the 8th of September 1887. The marriage was conducted by John Gennon registrar of marriages at his office in Carlton Victoria. During their marriage Frederick who had a strict Methodist upbringing continued to be an active member of the Methodist church and for some of the time was a Methodist Lay preacher.
Frederick worked at his trade as an Iron Moulder in a foundry in Melbourne until he was laid off in 1902. Unable to find steady work in Melbourne he spent much of his time doing charity work.
Much of 1903 and 1904 were used to seek work in Perth in Western Australia, unfortunately without success. In 1905 he set his sights further afield and moved his family to Christchurch, New Zealand. Here they lived for about 2 years at 24 Chester St.
On the 28th of December 1907 Frederick applied and was accepted for a position as a Wood Machinist at John Jackson and Company Limited Saw Millers and Timber Merchants in Timaru. He worked there until his retirement on the 29th of July 1932.
