Fred W Ford Claimed by Death
End Comes in Florence Hospital on Saturday Afternoon
Fredrick Wentworth Ford popular Georgetonian and one of the last rice planters in this region passed away in a Florence Hospital Saturday afternoon after an illness extending over several months.
Mr Ford was born in Charleston April 20th 1858 second son of Fredrick Wentworth Ford and Mary Mazyck Hume. After his graduation from Porter's Military Academy he worked with Mr William Boyle at Rawtowles and one year later accepted a position with Mr William Johnstone Lucas at Santee. Shortly afterward he engaged in the planting of rice on the Rice Hope and Bear Hill Plantations. After the storm of 1908 which marked the end of the rice planting industry on the Santee River Mr Ford moved to Wedgefield Plantation on Black River where he continued the planting of rice for several years. He retired from active work about a year and a half ago on account of ill health and took up his residence in Georgetown where he lived until the time of his death.
He was an active member of the Episcopal Church and served as secretary and treasurer of the Church of the Messiah Santee.
Mr Ford was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him and died mourned by a wide circle of warm friends.
He is survived by his widow formerly Miss Mary Ashe Lucas; three sons Fredrick Wentworth Ford, Alexander Hume Ford of Georgetown and William Lucas Ford Hilo Hawaii; two daughters Misses Margaret Deas and Ellen Hume Ford of Georgetown; one brother Alexander Hume Ford director of Pan Pacific Union Honolulu; four sisters Misses Mary M and Charlotte H Ford and Mrs Louis Jervey of Charleston and Mrs L L Williams of Asheville NC.
Funeral services were conducted from the Church of Prince George Monday afternoon with the Rev H D Bull rector officiating assisted by the Rev J S Poyner rector St John's Episcopal Church Florence. Interment followed in the graveyard. Active pall bearers were Russell Doar, Cordes Lucas, D B Morris, Ben McLeod, Frank Gadsden, Delma Rosa, F E Johnstone, Sam Creighton; honorary Alfred LaBruce Sinclair White, Thomas White, Glennie Heriot, Alston Pyatt, M W Pyatt, C L Ford, Joseph Schenk, H M Hucks S M Ward, Marvin Thomas, W D Morgan and G T Ford.
