About Frederick Holmes à Court
Fredrick moved to Australia after, rumour has it, duelling with Marquis of Queensbury's son as he thought he had killed him and duelling had been made illegal at that time.
Upon the death of his father the 2nd Baron, he forfeited his inheritance by failing to return to the UK. Upon his death, newspaper cutting's advertising his father death and the inheritance was found. (in his pockets, the story goes)
He apparently arrived in Roma (QLD) the 1860s and left after 14 Dec 1867 seemingly disappearing into obscurity with the next known record being of his death in 1917 in Rockhampton.
He was mentioned as a witness to manslaughter on 14 May 1864.
Was known as a bit of a toff by the local Roma newspaper. It seems that he was also known to have a good understanding of small-bore guns which seems to corroborate the early assertion on the duel.
Credited with starting the "Up-Hill" mob in Roma (the toffs).
A book called the Roma Triangle published by Barry Donnelly refers to his actions and landholdings at that time.
He held substantial holdings along the Maranoa & Warrago Rivers in the mid-1860s as well as properties in Roma.
