Frederick Steffy(Steffan)

The youngest of the sons of Johann Philip Steffen (c.1704-c.1765) is very poorly documented. No birth or baptism has been found. Two sources slightly contradict each other concerning his estimated year of birth. The records of the Reformed congregation of Muddy Creek Union Church state that he was 15 as of June 8, 1767 when he took his first communion (i.e., born 1752). However, the Orphans Court stated that Frederick was under 14 when a legal guardian was assigned him on March 5, 1765 (i.e., born no later than March 1751).

Frederick's earliest children by Maria Elizabeth Weidner were born in the Muddy Creek region, but most of the children were documented as adults in Berks County so it is possible if not likely that Frederick and Elizabeth moved the family there toward 1800. Their descendants multiplied greatly and tended to remain in Berks, some eventually settling in Reading. To this day the name Steffy is ubiquitous in the area near Reading. Nonetheless, the clan's earliest decades in Berks remain sketchy at best.
