About Frederik Johannes Enslin

Biography

Frederik Ensen

Federik Ensen married Albertha Oosthuizen on July 17, 1814 in George, South Cape DC, Western Cape, South Africa. Together they had the following children: Barbara De Meillon; Adriana Elizabeth Hendrina Carolina Enslin; Johannes Marthinus Enslin; Johanna Berry.

Unlisted.

He emigrated to the Cape prior to 1795 when he purchased land at Graaff Reinet. One can assume he must have been between 20 and 25 years old when he emigrated to the Cape, and thus born ca. 1770 to 1775.

He participated in the 1806 Battle of Blaauwberg as part of the German troops who fought on the side of the Batavian government and captured.

Cabri and James (2020) wrote:

"We now know that Barbara’s father was indeed German. His name has several variants in historical documents, including Frederik Enselen, Fredrik Ensen, Frederik Ensen, Johan Fredrik Hensel and Fredrik Enzlen or Enslen."

"Evidence of his background is found in an 1806 petition to Sir David Baird, Governor and Commander in Chief of His Britanick (sic) Majesty & Colony the Cape of Good Hope. The letter, shown in Appendix, Figure 25, reads in part: ‘The humble Petition of Goos And’s Watermeyer, member of the Finance Chamber, respectfully herewith to Your Excellency…may I pleade to your Excellency to allow the Person Fredrik Ensen, German, formerly belonging to the Batavian Light Horse Men, and at present confined in the Main Gard permission to remain at this Place, in order he could be released out of his emprisonment (sic), to be employed as a servant in Your Exce: Petrs Service; annexing at the Present the Passport of the said Man from his Regiment, and being to Petrs ready to give for good conduct required security.’"
