Freelove Kibbe Smith Hurd

  • Birth: Jan. 8, 1750 - Enfield, Hartford County, Connecticut, USA
  • Death: Sep. 13, 1840 - Sandisfield, Berkshire County, Massachusetts, USA

Freelove, second daughter of Isaac and Eunice Miller Kibbe, married Joshua Smith (Joshua, James, Daniel -- a veteran of the American Revolution and a descendant of Mayflower Pilgrim Thomas Rogers) about 1768 in Eastham, Barnstable, Massachusetts; they removed with other family members to Sandisfield, Berkshire County, where they contributed ten children to that pioneer community.

Joshua died 1793 and was "...buried between Sage Rd & York Lake (Note: This grave was originally found on the Moses farm - New Hartford Road in Sandisfield but moved to its present place.) Tombstone found in deep woods by deer hunters in Sandisfield. Inscription: "Joshua Smith died of small pox Nov 18 1793 in 49th year. Here lies interred the sleeping dust of one who made the Lord his trust, who served our country through the Revolutionary war." Erected by his granddaughter H A Smith.

In 1806, Joshua's first cousin Rebecca Smith (Benjamin, James, Daniel--a descendant of Pilgrims Thomas Rogers and Stephen Hopkins) died and was buried in the Beech Plain cemetery. Her widower, Daniel Hurd (another Revolutionary veteran), married Freelove and left her a widow for the second time in 1814; they had no children. She lived into her 91st year, suffering from senile dementia toward the end, requiring court-ordered guardianship.

Daniel Hurd died intestate and insolvent, as his probate record testifies. It remains something of a mystery that his widow (or somebody acting on her behalf) should erect, six miles from the resting places of Daniel and his first bride Rebecca, a most unusual stone which insists that "Frelove" was Daniel's "relict."
