• JOB WHIPPLE was born March 30, 1749, and died September 18, 1822 (aged 73 years and 5 months). Freelove Carpenter, his wife, was born May 8, 1749, and died February 16, 1834 (aged 84 years and 9 months). Elder Barber, their pastor, preached the funeral sermon for each. The text for the husband was from Job vii. 9, 10 ; he died at a distance from home, and hence the significance of the words of the text chosen : "He shall return no more to his home, neither shall his place know him any more" ; and for the wife, from Revelation xix. 13, — "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord." Freelove Carpenter was a granddaughter of Judge Lapham ; her mother (Mrs. Carpenter, daughter of Judge Lapham) lived at Cumberland Hill, Rhode Island, where Freelove was born and brought up. Whipple is a name of common occurrence there now.
