About Fridolph Swanson - Svenson

Some of his Swedish friends called him "Fred".

His Grandfather (?) .. was Sven Nielsson (may have been his Mother's father) born in Amal, Sweden, died 1891 Grandmother.... Anna Maria Nielsson. - His Grandfather worked as a Stevedore @ the docks. His Father was Axel Svenson born 1862, died 1900, worked as a stonemason in Amal...His mother was Josephine (Linderholm) Born in the 1860's, died before 1900. Fridolf, born Amal, Sweden 1886 died 6/28/1966 Attended all 6 grades of Amal public school was a Private in the Kings Guards in Stockholm, Sweden Emigrated to the US on 7/12/1906 Worked as a coal miner in Yatesboro, Pa, worked as a lumberjack as he worked his way across Pennsylvania until he met and married Charlotte (Strom) in Warren, Pa. They settled in Ridgway where he worked in the planeing mill, brickyard and Tannery. He was 5' 8" tall, had Chesnut brown hair and grey/blue eyes...he weighed 150-175. He was born in Åmål, Sweden.

He taught himself english, was a reader and enjoyed the popular books of his day and also read a great deal of science fiction. He bought a book and taught himself algebra. He never borrowed money, but kept a few thousand dollars in the bank for whatever he might need in an emergency. He was a cousin of Art, Sven and Oscar Newquist. Art lived beside him on Florence St. in Ridgway, Sven lived across the street, down over the bank on Rock St. and Oscar lived in the last house before the far houses close to "Devil's Bend" on Florence st.

He never drove a vehicle, but did own a 1927 Essex that Hilding and Reinhold would drive. He walked to downtown Ridgway almost every day and never without a suit, vest and tie. When this writer lived on Vernon Ave. at a young age, he would walk there at least once a week if not more. It was a mile to Main St. and at least 3/4 of a mile to Vernon Ave.

During WW 2 he was an armed guard at the rail yard by the Tannery. He carried a 32 cal. automatic and a "sap", which is a blackjack made from a rubber hose filled with sand and stoppered at each end with a wood plug. I actually held this "sap" a few times and noted that it would have been a fair persuasion to someone. He was naturalized a decade before Charlotte, but she was naturalized during WW 2.

Åmål

Åmål (Swedish pronunciation: [o%CB%90mo%CB%90l]%29 is a locality and the seat of Åmål Municipality in Västra Götaland County, Sweden with 9,065 inhabitants in 2010.[1] It is situated on the western shore of Lake Vänern. In 2005 Åmål received second prize in the international competition, The International Awards for Liveable Communities (also known as the LivCom Awards).[2] A Blues Festival has been held annually in Åmål since 1992. Åmål was founded in the 17th century by Queen Christina, and became one of the now defunct Cities of Sweden on April 1, 1643, and the only city in the historical province of Dalsland. Its location close to the borders of the Denmark-Norway alliance made it vulnerable to attack and it accordingly suffered over the ensuing centuries: first in 1645, when it was almost completely demolished, again in 1676 and 1679; and the last time in 1788 when it was conquered by the Danes, who then held it for a short while. The town suffered devastating fires in 1777, 1809, 1846 and 1901. After the last severe fire in 1901, whereby 1000 people became homeless, and one third of the city was burnt to the ground, it was rebuilt with wider streets and larger houses in a Jugend style of architecture. The area of wooden houses, the so-called Plantaget, south of the river, the Åmålsån, that runs through the town into the lake, was spared by the fire and today forms the "old town" area. (This is actually true, and the way Show me love is written in Swedish) Show Me Love (Fucking Åmål)
