About Friederike Eichholz

  • The Grindel Jewish Cemetery was established in 1711 in Hamburg-Rotherbaum with the last burial taking place in 1909. From then on, all deceased were buried at the Jewish Cemetery Llandkoppel in Hamburg-Ohlsdorf which had opened in 1883. The Grindel Cemetery was subjected to anti-Semitic vandalism in the early 1930s and by 1937, the Nazis had achieved their objective of closing it completely in order to erect apartment houses. The Jewish Community exhumed as many bodies as possible and reburied them in Ohlsdorf. They also managed to transfer 450 of the 8000 existing gravestones before the Grindel Cemetery was raised to the ground and built upon.

Friederike and her husband Meyer Eichholz were among those whose remains were exhumed and reburied in Llandkoppel, Ohlsdorf. This took place on April 30, 1937.
