Fred was born in Danzig, Germany, what is now Dnask, Poland. From his immigration records he had at least two brothers. One, Leo Gutzeit, in 100 ?Karthunerth, Danzig, Germany, and the other Arnholdt W. Gutzeit in Chicago, Illinois. Arnold(t) W. Gutzeit, b. 1862, immigrated to Chicago before Fred. Fred arrived in New York from Hamburg, at the age of 23 on the ship "Patricia", on 11/24/1906. Lists occupation as weinkufer/wine holder, translated:wine cellarman. His 1912 home address is: 300 Beethoven Place, Chicago (Shields Twp, Lake County, North Chicago.) Returning to Westersode, Germany in 1910 and then back again to Chicago, along with wife Sophie and daughter Emma in 1912, arriving first in New York, on May 4th, 1912 from Hamburg on the "Pennsylvania." 1940 Census lists his occupation as "Manager, Hotel." Residing in Maywood, IL (Cook County.)
