Fritz Prestien, Generalmajor

Fritz Prestien, born 06-03-1887 in Gotha, Thüringen, joined the Army Service after his education to Cadet on 10-03-1904, age 17, with the 9th Lothringisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 173, as a Fahnenjunker. Promoted to Lieutenant on 18-08-1905. He in spring of 1913 was transferred to the Luftwaffe and starts a pilot training. He was in the air of the first war with the 5th Field Flyer Squadron and promoted to Oberleutnant and he ends the war as a Hauptmann. He retired from the Army Service on 30-09-1919 and in spring of 1933 he as an instructor is assigned to the Commercial Flying School, in Braunschweig. He changed to the Flyer School in his hometown Gotha as an instructor, on 01-06-1934 and becomes the commander of the School in Gotha on 01-10-1934. Fliegerhorst Commander Gotha. At the beginning of World War II he as an Oberstleutnant is the Quartermaster II with Air Region Command IV. On 01-02-1940 promoted to Oberst and on 01-12-1943 to Major General. In the spring of 1944 he is appointed as Airport Area Commander 4/III. He is released of this position 11-02-1945 and placed to the disposal of the Flying Replacement Division. Prestien not a battlefield General was retired on 28-02-1945, age 57, not useful anymore. Living in Bensheim Prestien, died at the old age of 84 and is buried with his wife Wally, born von Minckwitz, who died old age 95, in 1988, on the cemetery of Schönberg, Bensheim.

Fritz Prestien trat nach seiner Kadettenausbildung am 10. März 1904 mit dem Charakter als Fähnrich in die Kaiserliche Armee ein. Er kam dabei zum 9. Lothringisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 173. Bei diesem wurde er am 18. August 1905 zum Leutnant befördert. Danach wurde er dann die nächsten Jahre als Kompanieoffizier beim 9. Lothringisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 173 eingesetzt. Im Herbst 1911 wurde er dann zum 7. Badisches Infanterie-Regiment Nr. 142 versetzt. Im Frühjahr 1913 wechselte er dann zur Fliegertruppe. Bis zum Beginn des 1. Weltkrieges im August 1914 wurde er dann zu verschiedenen Stationen der Fliegerausbildung kommandiert. Dann wurde er dann am 3. August 1914 zur Feld-Flieger-Abteilung Nr. 5 versetzt. An diesem Tag wurde er auch zum Oberleutnant befördert. Im Ersten Weltkrieg wurde er dann noch bei vielen verschiedenen Truppenteilen der Fliegertruppe eingesetzt. Am 18. August 1915 wurde er dann zum Hauptmann befördert. Nach dem 1. Weltkrieg wurde er nach einer längeren Zeit im Urlaub aus dem Heer verabschiedet. Ab dem Frühjahr 1933 wurde er als Ausbilder an der Verkehrsfliegerschule in Braunschweig eingesetzt. Am 1. Juni 1934 wechselte er dann zur Fliegerschule in seine Heimatstadt nach Gotha. Am 1. Oktober 1934 wurde er zum Fliegerführer Gotha ernannt. Am 1. März 1935 wurde er dann als Ergänzungsoffizier in die neue Luftwaffe übernommen. Er wurde dabei als Major (E) zum Fliegerhorst-Kommandant Gotha ernannt. Am 1. April 1936 wurde er dann zum Luftgau-Kommando 7 nach Dresden versetzt. Dort wurde er dann beim Stab eingesetzt. Dort wurde er am 1. April 1937 auch zum Oberstleutnant (E) befördert. Ab Oktober 1937 gehörte er durch die Umbenennung seines Stabes zum Luftgau-Kommando IV. Am 1. Juli 1938 wurde er dann zum Quartiermeister II vom Luftgau-Kommando IV ernannt. Mitte Juli 1939 wurde er dann zum Luftgau-Stab z.b.V. 4 versetzt. Am 1. Februar 1940 wurde er zum Oberst befördert. Am 1. Dezember 1943 wurde er zum Generalmajor befördert. Ab dem Frühjahr 1944 wurde er dann als Flughafen-Bereichs-Kommandant 4/III eingesetzt. Mitte Februar 1945 wurde er abgelöst. Er wurde dann zur Verfügung der Flieger-Ersatz-Division gestellt. Am 28.
