About G. P. FitzGerald
OBITUARY MR G. P FITZGERALD. HOBART, Wednesday. — Mr G. P. Fitzgerald, draper and well-known re- sident, died to-day. Mr George Par- ker Fitzgerald was the son of the late Mr James Fitzgerald, who was for many years superintendent of the Ho- bart General Hospital. He was born in Hobart in 1843, and was educated at the Hutchins School. At the age of At the age of nineteen he went to Sydney where he was engaged by the softgoods firm of Messrs. Farmer and Co., of Pitt- street, and ultimately became a partner in the concern. Owing to his inability to stand the climate, however, Mr Fitz- gerald retired from the firm in 1882 and returned to this State, opening an agency for Messrs. Robert Gray, Son, and Co. of Sydney, at Hobart. He became a, partner with Mr Gray in the Hobart business, and ultimately sole proprietor. When the business was first started it was wholesale only but in Mr Fitzgerald opened the premises in Collins-street as a retail warehouse on purely cash lines, and the undertaking was a great success, larger premises having been built to accommodate the increasing trade. These premises were completely de- stroyed by fire about six years ago and on the same site new and more up-to-date premises were erected. On June 24th, 1886, Mr Fitzgerald, who was then prominent in the civic life of his native city, was elected one of the members for West Hobart in the House of Assembly, and in 1888 he was a member of the Fysh Administration without portfolio. At that time he was a justice of the peace for the terri- tory, but he resigned when he joined the Government. Mr Fitzgerald had taken a great interest in technical edu- cation, and through his personal ex- ertions the Hobart Technical School was mainly established. Whilst his activities were well known in the South in conseuquence of the interest he took in the civic and commercial life f his native city, Mr Fitzgerald ac- quired especial prominence through- out the State because of the position he filled in conjunction with the late Mr William Hurt, of Launceston, as official liquidator of the defunct Bank of Van Diemen's Land. Because of the marked ability of these two gentle- men the affairs of the bank were suc- cessfully wound up and shareholders were extremely thankful to the liquida- tors for the great work they perform- ed in that connection. Mr Fitzgerald was for many years a director is the Cascade Brewery Company, and occu- pied the position of chairman up to the time of his death.
In Sydney on 28 November 1863 he married Mary Love; they had ten children. After her death on 3 May 1881 he returned to Hobart where he established an agency for Robert Gray & Co., wholesale merchants. On 5 August 1882 at St John's Anglican Church, New Town, he married Emma Caroline Gwatkin Lovett; they had three children.
