* In the East End Cemetery, there is a small stone with the inscription 'Polly Parrott 1923-1957'; the parrot was said to have belonged to Garland, and lived to the ripe old age of thirty-four years.
* Garland was raised on a farm, and did a little farming, but he didn't like it very much. He also didn't talk about it too much, but he rode for a short time with the Night Riders when he was a young man. Garland ran away from home at the age of fourteen (after trading his tobacco crop to his brother, Tharp, for a couple of ducks (whatever happened to the ducks, no one knows), going by boat on the Cumberland River to TN. Arriving in TN cold, hungry and flat broke, he asked a store clerk for a nickel's worth of cheese and crackers. When he had worked long enough to repay that debt, he decided that farm life wasn't all that bad and returned home. In May, 1905, the first road grader was purchased by Trigg County Fiscal Court; one of the first operators was Garland. Garland, his brother Tharp and his Uncle Charley (Duck) ran a livery stable in Cadiz for some time; he operated the first Ford and Chevrolet agencies in Cadiz; and also at one time operated the first bus line, The Blue Goose, from Cadiz to Gracey, KY. When he was a very young man, he operated the last stagecoach from Cadiz to Golden Pond. He was a member of the Hopkinsville Elks Club and a charter member of the Eagles Club at Grand Rivers. He retired in 1956 having operated the Gulf Oil Distributing Company for forty-four years, being the oldest such distributor in the state. He served in the House of Representatives for twelve years, starting his terms in 1930; and served for two terms as Trigg County coroner. He served a time as a guard at the State Penitentiary in Eddyville, KY. He was instrumental in raising funds for the construction of the Ollie James Highway, now known as the South Road, which runs from Cadiz to Dover. He was also instrumental for bringing the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp to Trigg County. One of his unrealized dreams was to be a riverboat captain, however, he took many cruises on the Delta Queen, and once was a passenger on the Belle of Louisville during the annual race with the Delta Queen. He was a man who resembled and dressed like W.C. Fields.
