About Gefr Wolfgang Bergter
Gefr Wolfgang Bergter, was a German Serviceman and prisoner of war in Canada during the Second World War. In 1970 he was disinterred from Lake of the Woods Cemetery, Kenora, Ontario and buried in the German War Graves Section in Woodland Cemetery in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. The servicemen are buried two to a grave according to the names on the headstone. Wolfgang Bergter is buried with Johann Wagner.
He, along with fellow POW Erwin Stöckl left their camp on Adams River, near Sioux Narrows, Ontario, in November 1944 and did not return. Some think they were escaping, but they were likely just exploring the woods around the camp as escape attempts at the onset of winter were uncommon. Either way, they appear to have gotten lost and froze to death. Their bodies were discovered by the Ontario Provincial Police the following spring. Note that the date of death reflects when they were discovered, as the actual date of death was unknown.
