About Geoffrey Hildreth

Biography

Jeffrey Hildreth was born on May 17, 1755 in New Windsor, Orange County, New York, United States. His parents were Joseph Hildreth, III and Abigail (...) Hildreth.

Jeffrey married Lily (Bowen) Hildreth in 1795 in Washington Co., VA. Together they had the following children: Abigail (Hildreth) Richardson; William Hildreth; Reese Bowen Hildreth; John Hildreth; Joseph Hildreth; Jesse Bowen Hildreth; Elender Hildreth; Nearly Hildreth; Preston Hildreth; Louisa Hildreth; Henry Hildreth; Lonora Hildreth; Jefferson Mccarty Hildreth; Jonathan Hildreth; Eliza Hildreth; Lilly (Hildreth) Barnes; Mariah Hildreth; Sally Hildreth; Jonathan Hildreth.

Jeffrey married Rachel (McCarty) Hildreth on January 19, 1802 in Washington Co., VA.

He died in 1820 in Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky, United States.

He was mentioned a number of times in Montgomery County, Virginia land records. As Jeffrith Heldrith he was listed on a Montgomery County tax list dated 2 February 1789. A 2 February 1790 deed states that he was living in the neighborhood of Reed Creek. On 20 April 1790 he was assigned 100 acres on Reed Creek north of his father Joseph Heldrith in virtue of a land office treasury warrant dated 22 March 1790 and assigned in part to him by Sarah Hulsey, administrator of the estate of James Hulsey, who had on 25 August 1787 purchased 215 acres adjoining Joseph Heldrith (entry #506) from John Gullion. He signed the petition to form Russell County, Virginia in 1785. The 1810 Census shows him at Wythe County, Virginia with 5 slaves.

He might be the Jeffery Hildreth who appears on the 1820 census of Bourbon County, although his widow Rachel also appears and the reference on the census is probably to Jefferson Hildreth. He made his will 7 July 1820 and it was probated October 1820, so he died between those dates. His widow Rachel appears on the 1820 and 1830 censuses in Kentucky, and is perhaps, but not likely, the Rachel who appears on the 1850 census of DeKalb, Clinton County, Illinois. A Graham Hildridge also appears on the 1850 DeKalb Census and might have been a grandson.
