About Georg Matthaeus Merklin

Jörg "Georg" Merklin was born 1603 in Wimpfen, Hesse, Germany; died 1686 in Bonfeld, Heilbronn, Baden-Württemberg, Germany; he was buried December 16, 1686 at age 83. Georg married Eva about 1646, born in 1617; died March 13, 1690 in Bonfeld, Germany.

Georg moved from the District of Wimpfen, to Bonfeld, District of Heilbronn in Württemberg, Germany after one of the longest and most destructive conflicts in European history; the Thirty Years' War (1618–1648),[1] when entire regions were denuded by foraging armies. Initially, it was fought largely as a religious war between Protestants and Catholics in the Holy Roman Empire.

The period from 1621–1625, the "Palatinate phase" of the Thirty Years' War, consisted mostly of sieges conducted by the Spanish army that left the Palatinate in the hands of the Spanish. Georg Fredrick, Margrave of Baden-Durlach lost the Battle of Wimpfen (see painting, "Battle of Wimpfen") fighting against the Spanish on May 6, 1622, when the combined Spanish army of Field Marshal t'Serclaes van Tilly and General Fernández de Córdoba attacked Wimpfen, the District where Jörg Merklin was living.

The Spanish army then captured the city of Heidelberg on September 19, 1622 following an eleven-week siege. Christian the Younger of Brunswick lost the Battle of Stadtlohn where 13,000 out of his army of 15,000 were lost, including fifty of his high-ranking officers. So great was the devastation brought about by the war that estimates put the reduction of population in the German states at about 25% to 40%. Some regions were affected much more than others. Württemberg lost three-quarters of its population during the war. Together with the complete surrender of Bohemia in 1623, virtually all resistance in Germany ended.

In 1654 Jörg Merklin became a citizen of Bonfeld. In the church book of Bonfeld, District of Heilbronn, Kingdom of Württemberg, and in the District of Wimpfen, Grand Duchy of Hesse, Germany, the following is found concerning Jörg and Eva Merklin and their children.
