George Alleyne, of Chartley (Stafford) and Grantham (Lincolnshire).
Child of George Alleyne
- Richard Alleyne+1 d. 6 Sep 1559
The source of his parentage is not clear. Betham's Baronetage (1803) says he was a distant descendant of Alanus de Buchenhell, temp. Edw. I, and cites heraldic evidence. Burke's Peerage (1885 and 1914), Maddison (1902), and Stirnet (2015) do not trace the family earlier than George.
Maddison quotes the following statement by George's son Richard:
Richard Allen of Grantham, died 6 Sept. 1 Eliz., 1559. This Richard Allen declared upon his death-bed, to George Allen his brother and Henry his nephew, that their ancestors were lords of Chartley Parke, for that one of their ancestors did kill his Barbar by chance medley, and did thereupon flee to Ireland, whereby he escaped the attainture and punishment, and there lived unknown many years : so lost the same lands which ye Lord Ferrers lately had and enjoyed, and this Richard was the first that dwelt in Grantham, and revealed ye same, as he had understood it from his Father and Grandfather, with tears, bewailing ye chance. Of this, I, York Herald, was credibly informed this 29 January 1578.
