About George Andrews
GEORGE ANDREWS, ESQUIRE
"George Andrews, of Winwick, Esq.; who married the daughter and heir of the Baron of Burford, and had issue, two sons, George and Thomas."
"The Baronetage of England: Or The History of the English Baronets" / William Betham, 1801
Commentary: During his lifetime, George Andrews became the first of the Andrews family to remove from Northampton, relocating to Carlisle, Cumberland. George's removal to Cumberland occurred during the reign of King John Plantagenet (a.k.a. John Lackland and / or Johan sanz Terre in Norman French), suggesting a degree of royal patronage. George Andrews was likely the first of the Andrews family to self consciously identify as "English". With the loss of Normandy to King Phillip II of France subsequent to the Battle of Bouvines (July 27, 1214), the Anglo - Norman nobility and gentry had little choice but to identify as "English".
